Thunderkick Half a Century

The Swedish online video slots developer Thunderkick is now firmly over the halfway mark to 100 video slot titles on the iGaming scene, and to celebrate this remarkable feat we look back at just how this firm adapted to its market environment to excel as a brand!

When the Thunderkick slot development studio first came to our attention, it quickly built a name for itself mainly because the video slot arena was vastly different to what it has become over the past half a decade.

There were very few new software providers brave enough to break into the industry, and so when we saw the likes of newbie brand Thunderkick pulling in partnership deals with casino aggregators and proprietary online casinos, we all paid attention. We have to admit; we were not sure that its style of video slots would last long, but that was because personally, I was a desktop slot play – evidentially I was not the target market.

For those involved in the iGaming industry in 2014 when Thunderkick’s first video slot hit the online waves, it was so rare and almost seemed unlikely that a new kid on the block could tussle for its slice of the video slot’s gaming space considering the big guns like Microgaming, BetSoft, and NetEnt were stealing most of the limelight! Yet, in came Thunderkick with its retro, and to be frank, basic looking video slots! And somehow the brand’s flat looking fast-paced slots still stood out and become instant hits amongst slot fans.

All those software developers with fancy ‘Flash’ enabled video slot titles complete with animations, brand new features, and pixel perfect graphic design found themselves competing with the basic looking off-colour video slot titles from Thunderkick but why? It was bizarre that a set of retro/cartoon slots with simple features could compete versus slots with gameplay and graphics equal to the latest PlayStation and Xbox games, but Thunderkick had a strategy, and it was one that was working.

Mobile Compatible: Thunderkick slots answered the calls for an online slot collection that worked on mobile devices! It first became famous for fast playing but simply designed titles like the Barber Shop, Toki Time, and Birds on a Wire which you can still find today in most Thunderkick Casinos! Those slots worked on mobile without lag and loaded quickly on mobile devices thanks to the un-intensive graphics which many slot developers at the time failed to realise but Thunderkick did!

The Rise Into iGaming – Thunderkick Celebrates 50 Games!

At the time of Thunderkick’s inception, when desktop slot gameplay still ruled the roost (not anymore by the way), the trend of playing video slots while on move was in full throttle bringing us into the mobile slot era. With the newly introduced touchscreen tech creating a booming tablet and smartphone market, as well as iOS and Android apps now the new fad, people wanted to play mobile slots with uninterrupted gameplay. The problem was that wireless was bitty, 2G was slow and 3G not widely available, while in many areas in countries where video slots gambling was spreading like wildfire – like the UK, Australia, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand – basic GPRS was the primary or most widely available tech!

In the end, Thunderkick got their strategy spot on. If you were a desktop player, yes, there were many alternative options to play high-tech and visually pleasing video slots, but as a mobile player, those new fancy slots designed for a mobile experience kept lagging, crashing, freezing or were underperforming. It meant for a smooth experience players either needed to play classic slots or head over to Thunderkick’s video slot titles which guaranteed a smoother and fast mobile slot gaming experience.

Maybe if the firm entered the market today with its early slot designs versus the many HTML5 slots running smoothly on super-fast mobile networks, we may not be celebrating Thunderkick’s half a century in video slot titles. However, thanks to its early strategic entrance into the iGaming market, this brand is a growing slot development studio that could hit the 60 slot titles mark before 2020 is out. It’s an amazing achievement for any vide slot development studio to make it this far, and who would have thought those retro-looking video slots released in 2014, two years after the firm began operating out of Sweden way back in 2012 would be the catalyst to one of the greatest slot developers online right now!

Today Thunderkick titles are now found in the video slots collection of almost all major online casinos! The firm has partnership deals with some of the top names in the iGaming sphere – Unibet, 888 Casino, Bet365, Casumo, Gamesys, LeoVegas, Mr Green, William Hil, SoftSwiss, PokerStars, Dunder, BetVictor, and more!
