Big Time Gaming is the owner of the rights and all royalties that come from the Megaways reel mechanic. Every software provider that uses the Megaways reel mechanic must make a deal with BTG beforehand and the latest slot developer to do so is Spade Gaming.

Megaways slots tech is the newest way to play online video slots. It follows the trend of no pay line slot technology invented by the Microgaming casino game developer, but BTG’s version adds a twist to the way the reels play out. Instead of a fixed number of symbols and ‘ways-to-win’, Megaways reels shape-shift on every spin. Each reel can land between 2 and 7 symbols which then across all 6 reels creates a random number of ‘ways-to-win’. Also, as Megaways slots have 6 reels, and up to and over 100,000 ways-to-win, players can land huge wins!

One of the key reasons Spade Gaming has decided to join in on the Megaways action is because of the remarkable success slots using the BTG reel mechanic are having. Adding these slots to any software developer’s portfolio offers players yet another way to play a well as add diversity.

Online slot companies such as Microgaming, Pragmatic Play, iSofBet, Blueprint Gaming, and recently Quickspin, have all joined in on the action. Now we are seeing the number of slots using Megaways grow every month with new Megaways titles coming out by the dozen. Just this month we covered 4 Diamond Blues Megaways, Big Bad Wolf Megaways, Dwarven Gems Megaways, and NFT Megaways slot review in our news section.

According to the report on the Spadegaming website, the slot and table game developer has not yet announced the name of its first Megaways slot title or when it is expected to hit the online video slots market – currently the developers are looking for ways they can add the new mechanic to future releases!

The Evolution of Megaways Reel Mechanics

We are still not sure how BTG managed to trademark the technology in what was a shrewd move. After all, Megaways are just an enhanced version of ways-to-wins (no pay line) slots originally invented by Microgaming, which opened up the concept to the wider video slots community. That began with 243-ways-to-win with 5×3 reels, which then grew to 1024-ways-to-win on 5×4 reels.’

After the 1024-ways-to-win tech, we began to see an influx of cluster pays slots as it seemed we have reached our limit with the number of ways to win that could be added to the reels. However, along came slots such as Playtech’s Buffalo Blitz with 4,096 ways to win. This was achieved by extending the reels to 6 and using 6×4 reel technology.

Next came Megaways slots! BTG decided not to share the tech with the wider video slots community without slapping a trademark on it so it could earn royalties from what is now the next best thing in slots mechanics/tech. It was in fact a rather selfish move considering most of the behind Megaways is not BTG’s innovation, but business is business and it’s a cutthroat world out there sometimes. By copying Microgaming and Playtech, BTG were able to enhance the way reels rolled in symbols by creating 6×7 reel sets.

With 6 reels, no pay lines (ways-to-win), and 7 symbols, BTG were able to create over 115,000 ways to win. And just to make the concept different, reels could land 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 symbols – i.e., the number of symbols that land on each reel is never fixed.

Now BTG is owned by Evolution after a successful takeover bid by the NASDAQ Stockholm listed iGaming giant. To date, Evolution owns Ezugi, Red Tiger Gaming, NetEnt, Big Time Gaming, and Digiwheel. We expect to the once live dealer brand only now turned slots and RNG table games developer, to make more acquisitions in the future!
