EGBA Q2 Responsible Gambling Stats

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has reported a considerable surge in its efforts to promote responsible gambling.

In its latest ‘Sustainability Report 2022/2023’, the statistics reveal that its member companies have successfully distributed over 45.5 million messages related to safer gambling. These numbers are astounding and reflect a personalised approach to consumer protection in the industry from those participating.

Of the messages dispatched, at least 48% were personalised, amplifying their potential effect on consumers. This represents a significant 40% increase year-over-year. Such results underline the dedication of EGBA members to bring about a safer and more sustainable industry. One of the aims to keep regulators satisfied that work is being done to ensure all possible are being taken to prevent the issue of problem gambling.

In multiple jurisdictions, the topic of responsible gambling is being highlighted. Just recently Australia launched its BetSafe program. Also, Pennsylvania’s licensing authority announced upgrades to its self-exclusion tools after 20,000 citizens opted to use the tool to ban themselves from real money gambling.

The UK currently has its white paper in full swing. The paper modifies and adds new rules to the UK Gambling Act 2005 to prevent problem gambling.

Insights – EGBA members contribute € 49 million towards the prevention of problem gambling

Over 2022, customer accounts experienced a 5% growth, reaching 31.2 million. Among them, 74% were male and 26% were female, with the majority aged between 26 and 50. Additionally, 51% of customers receiving intervention reportedly decreased their financial losses in the following three-month period.

76% of EGBA members participated in responsible gambling training in a robust move towards safer practices. Furthermore, EGBA members contributed significantly to European problem gambling research, education, and treatment. Their total contributions amounted to € 49 million, a staggering 109% increase.

Positive Moves Forward to Promote Safer Gambling

In my opinion, the EGBA has shown positive strides in promoting responsible gambling and growing its customer base. The increase in personalised messages and intervention programs proves its commitment to consumer safety. On top of this, I like the way the organisation brings together gambling companies, tech experts, and other industry stakeholders to work together to tackle the issue of problem gambling. € 49 million is no small feat, and it all goes towards a systematic set of areas to help reduce the harms of gambling and promote responsible gambling.

However, the predominant male customer base may suggest that the next study needs to broaden the appeal to a more diverse audience. Although many gamblers are male, adding a female dimension to the stats would firstly give us some slightly different figure, and secondly give females a look into the effects of gambling on their gender. More interestingly, the result could be collated and then broken down into gender.

With all that being said, I am just trying to pick holes in a job well done. The impressive contribution to problem gambling research does put the EGBA on a pedestal when it comes to socially responsible industry players. This blend of customer growth and social responsibility makes EGBA’s prospects interesting for both consumers and investors.
