In Canada’s province of Ontario, the latest iGaming Ontario’s FY 2024-25 Q1 Market Performance Report shows all online gambling verticals continue to show year-on-year growth.
With that being said, looking back at the previous quarter’s data, there has been a decline in online poker’s quarter-over-quarter stats.
The data clearly indicates that an increasing number of Ontarians are placing sports bets and relying on casino sites regulated under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
However, the stats don’t show how many players also use overseas online casinos under the MGA and Curacao licensing, nor do stats for players who bet using cryptocurrency, mostly because this information is unavailable for data collection.
AGCO online gambling site information is readily open to the licensing authority as the framework requires all sites to report data. This information is also made public. Hence, all the latest stats for Q1 of 2024 released by AGCO are laid out neatly in the tables below.
What do the stats show?
Online casino, sports, and poker have increased year-on-year in the 2024 Q1 data compared to the stats reported in the Ontario Q1 2023 Results. Online casino gaming shows the highest growth rate of 33.6% year-on-year, while sports betting is close with a year-on-year % growth rate of 31.2%.
Online poker is the only thorn in the stats after the latest report by AGCO, which reported a decline of 9.9% quarter-over-quarter, but year-on-year growth is still positive, with a 14.9% growth rate. Arguably, the most interesting stat is that the number of active players using regulated online gambling sites for iGaming or sports betting has more than doubled, as the AGCO report shows a 106.5% increase in player accounts.
Overall, the stats show that Ontario’s iGaming market is a continuing success since it came online in April 2022, almost two and a half years ago. There were a few doubters that a regulated provincial online gambling market in Canada would work out, including myself, but kudos to the bigwigs at the AGCO because the stats clearly show a bustling industry.
