From the start of April to the end of December, GambleAware received £16 million in donations from a variety of sources, it has revealed. The organisations that contributed to the charity came from various parts of the British gambling sector, but three contributors donated more than any other, and by some margin.

Out of all the donors, there were three that contributed more than £1 million. William Hill gave £1 million exactly putting it in third place, Entain added £4 million to the coffers in second, but Bet365 was the runaway winner with £4.2 million. Together they made up more than half of all charitable contributions to the GambleAware fund.

Other contributions to note came from the operators Betway, Unibet UK, and Playtech, giving £60,200, £92,000, and £51,768.46 respectively.

The donations received this year are higher than usual, as some of the leading operators pledged to increase the percentage of their GGY (gross gaming yield) that they had previously donated. In the past, GambleAware asked British operators who make a profit from gambling activity, to donate 0.1%. Operators who are making below £250,000 in GGY were asked to donate a token of £250.

However, there have been several operators who wish to donate a bigger percentage, with many stating that they will gradually increase the amounts, with the final percentage reaching 1% by 2023. GambleAware has revealed the pledges in a list, and it shows that Ladbrokes Coral Group will contribute over £4.7 million.

What Does Gamble Aware do? – What the Money goes Towards

A spokesperson for the charity spoke about the funds raised and explained that every contribution the fund receives will go towards activities to combat problem gambling. The charity supports a collaborative approach to preventing harms caused by gambling and looks through the whole system for areas requiring improvement. GambleAware has called for an industry-wide ‘mandatory levy’, which it believes would go a long way to addressing harms caused by gambling, and would encourage more consistency and transparency in the industry. Sustainable funding that a mandatory levy would provide would allow for more research, prevention, and treatment that is seen as vital for the cause.

GambleAware: GambleAware is known all across the industry for its tireless efforts in England, Scotland, and Wales to provide treatment services for the protection of people who are suffering from gambling problems, as well as working on preventing an issue with gambling in the future.
