They say the house always wins, which is true to a certain degree. Players always have a chance of winning, but there is always an edge leaning in favour of the house. This edge is where casinos make their profit! However, on the other side of the coin, charities can also win as generous gambling companies boost their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs to give back to the community.
One of the first selfless acts of charity in iGaming I remember was the introduction of Microgaming’s Play It Forward program. As the company’s roots that led to its exponential growth began in the UK’s Isle of Man, it decided to use the Play It Forward program to give back to the community that helped Microgaming become the undisputed pioneer of online gambling.
At the end of last month, I also reported a similar news piece – Software Provider Charity Good Will – involving Merkur and Novomatic. So, this is more of the same but with different brand names in the mix. Well, kind of. Greentube is one of the highlights, which incidentally has the tag line ‘the digital arm of Novomatic’.
Which brands have been in charity news this month? Gamomat, SBTI, IGT, Merkur, Aristocrat, MGM Resorts (LeoVegas), and the ICE event organisers.
Gamomat Assists African Wildlife Foundation (AWF)
This is not the first time we have seen a video slot designating profits to a charity, and it just so happens to be a brilliant idea. Encourage players to spin the reels on a game that donates profits to charity.
Gamomat is aptly using its Lava Lions online slots to support the African Wildlife Foundation. The slot first hit the iGaming scene in 2021. It has been so popular thanks to its Diamond Wilds, Stacked Lion symbols, and Volcano Scatters that Gamomat decided it is the ideal slot to support its CSR climate initiative.
More charity slots: In September last year, I created a news piece covering charity online slots. Take a look at and start spinning on games that give back to a good cause – Play slots that donate to charity!
Aristocrat Donates $500,000 to AISES
The Australian B2B casino giant listed on the Australian stock market donated half a million US dollars to the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). The gesture of goodwill goes a long way toward helping the organisation continue its goal to help the USA’s indigenous students train for a career in the gambling sector.
Further contributions: In the future, Artsitrocrat has also promised another US$ 30,000 towards the yearly AISES conference.
SBTi Issues Zero Emissions Approval to IGT
London-based International Game Technology (IGT) has set goals to reduce carbon emissions. As recognition for its efforts, the land-based and online casino B2B supplier has gained the approval of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The goal is to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
IGT SVP Wendy Montgomery said: “Receiving this validation from the SBTi represents a milestone achievement for IGT”.
IGT Zero Emissions Goals
- 2030: 50% reduction
- 2050: 90% reduction
Merkur Helping Climate Initiatives in Sri Lanka
Wow. The same company rarely gets into the news in two consecutive charity news reports. However, Merkur is back, showing how committed the software provider and land-based casino owner are to its climate initiatives. In its latest act of goodwill, the company is helping with wind farms in Sri Lanka. The project has already helped reduce carbon emissions by 2,000 tonnes and is still going strong.
Tony Boulton of Merkur UK: The company’s Director of Public and Political Relations feels that this should not persuade companies to make an effort despite the considerable challenge of reducing an environmental crisis.
More Charity News from August 2023
