UKGC Customer Safety Commitment

Concerned about the new UK gambling laws? The latest keynote speech was wholly positive as the UKGC remains committed to customer safety. (Photo by David Dibert on Unsplash)

As part of the Know Now Conference 2021, it can be confirmed that the UKGC is committed to customer safety standards. Some of the focal points were ‘social responsibility measures for gambling companies’ and the UKGC’s focus on a ‘safe, transparent and strictly regulated gambling sector’. During the speech, big wigs also stated that it will hold new discussions in regards to the monetary risk threshold. There is a full report of the keynote speech on the UKGC website.

The UKGC still believe that there are betting businesses out there that are not promoting safe gambling as you would expect them to, which is why these companies have now been threatened with penalties by the gambling regulators executive director, Tim Miller. Miller alluded to the fact that the UKGC had been involved in an in-depth evaluation of all online and on-land gambling businesses across 2020 and that the need to process some of this digitally during the pandemic had displayed the necessity for some of these online services to be improved.

The need for further evaluation of customer’s financial backgrounds seems to be a particular place for concern with the UKGC believing that large bets from new members are still allowed in many cases without a proper background check. Mr Miller has criticised these companies for the lack of checks on customer’s financial state and went on to say that he believed this was caused by an absence of responsibility and consideration towards the gambling industries patrons. With the ongoing review of the countries’ gambling act by the government, it is understood that the UKGC will not plan to consult on any parts of the government’s review and will instead focus on their findings on responsible gambling.

At a time when certain companies may seem more committed to their financial gain instead of their customer’s safety, the executive director believes now is the time for the public to see that the UKGC is making sure that these operators adhere to the high standards set in the gambling sector and that the UKGC will remain committed to regulating and issuing permits to the UK’s gambling industry.

Clearly, with work still to do but remaining faithful to his belief in a transparent and safe gambling environment, Miller, a few months ago at the CMS conference, noted how important he felt it was for an ‘exemplary gambling ecosystem’. The UKGC will target safeguarding customers against conceivable betting related damage after the gambling watchdog has discovered that numerous British gamers are inexperienced with the more secure betting tools that are accessible to them.

UKGC Regulations: The UK Gambling Commission regulates all UK online casinos as well as land-based operations, such as casinos, slot halls, racetrack betting, and high-street betting establishments. It is currently in the midst of a structural revamp, while the UK’s 2005 Gambling Act is being overhauled to bring in new measures to improve the system. For UK players, the future is looking bright as player protection is the authority’s primary concern.
