Casinos are being targeted by thieves online and offline. In one story, a student Steals 24k GBP, while Caesars is also in the headlines! (Image by Felix Lichtenfeld from Pixabay)
According to a recent news report published in the UK’s Birmingham Mail, a student attempted to withdraw thousands in Sterling from a famous UK land-based casino establishment.
Samuel Bob-Emmanuel, a 22-year-old student from Greenwich, London, recently tried to steal a considerable sum of £24,000 from Grosvenor Casino.
He was recently found guilty at Birmingham Crown Court of the crime. Fortunately, the student escaped a prison sentence and has been ordered to carry out community service. In the UK, this means free (unpaid) labour contributing to improving the local community. Samuel Bob-Emmanuel must carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and 25 days of rehabilitation.
How did he attempt to pull off the caper?
Bob-Emmanuel, a regular patron at the casino, managed to memorise the PIN code used by one of the gambling entertainment’s supervisors. He then returned to the casino and, taking advantage of an unattended poker room, tried to transfer £24,000 to his account. However, TSB Bank froze the transaction, thwarting the attempted theft.
Could he have gotten away with it? If only this student knew that transactions over £10,000 would immediately raise red flags per the UK financial system’s policy. Either way, even if he did manage to push the transaction through, the casino’s eye in the sky had already caught him in the act after staff had noticed the money was missing.
During the court session, his attorney, Mohammed Naser, said his client is a uni student. Still, he is taking a break from his university studies so he can return and finish his final academic year better equipped.
Trivia: Why is the Grosvenor Casino well-known in iGaming? The answer is that the casino hosts some Evolution Gaming’s duel play Roulette tables. Duel Play games allow players to connect to games on the casino floors of land-based casinos from their online casino account. Public Response and Repercussions
Despite advancements in AI-based surveillance and other security measures, Bob-Emmanuel’s attempt to withdraw cash from the Grosvenor Casino has raised some questions about the casino’s security systems.
The public reaction in the comments section of the Birmingham Mail has been diverse. Many are critical of Bob-Emmanuel’s actions in the news report titled Student Cheated Grosvenor Casino. Conversely, some directed their comments towards the efficacy of the casino’s security systems and procedures.
Some argue that establishments like Grosvenor should be ahead of the curve regarding security, especially in an age where technology can aid and abet criminal activity.
Legal Implications
The case could have broader implications for how casinos and similar establishments handle security in the future. Stricter regulations could be implemented to prevent further incidents, including enhanced identity verification protocols or real-time monitoring of financial transactions. This case may serve as a wake-up call, spurring other businesses to reevaluate and possibly overhaul their security systems.
However, no report of the UK Gambling Commission getting involved has been reported.
Casino Crime has been a Topic of Discussion Lately!
From students trying to earn an extra buck by cheating land-based casinos to cyber attacks on some of the largest online casinos in the USA, it seems that where there is money, someone is trying to get at it!
In Las Vegas, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a woman stole over $57,000 in casino chips from a client at Caesars Palace. And that’s not the first time the brand has been in the news lately. A report by Reuters a month ago, ‘Hackers who breached casino giants MGM, Caesars’ revealed Caesars was also hit by a large-scale cyber attack along with MGM and three other businesses.
In an unrelated cyberattack to the Caesars and MGM saga, Stake.com, the EGR Operators 2022 Crypto Operator of the Year award winner, was also hit recently with a massive $41 million stolen from its coffers. Over $16 million of the casino’s stablecoin was exchanged for Ethereum and lost. To make matters worse, the casino operator, Medium Rare N.V., also lost another $25.6 million via the hack via other channels.
Matthew O’Connor reported the story for the $41 million hack from Stakes.com on Casinoplusbonus on 8 September 2023 – Crisis at Stake.com.
