A recent global YouGov survey has highlighted a couple of key issues within the industry today. 63% of responses showed that of the people who gambled online in the past 12 months, these people, rather than retail, actually preferred vertical. Another key finding was that these players feel like operators should, or could, be doing more to counter certain factors that can lead to problem gambling.
The report took into consideration responses from just over 1,000 participants, from countries around the globe, including Denmark, France, Italy, India, Mexico, Singapore, Spain, and Sweden. In addition, there was a larger contribution from gambling in Australia, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States, where 2,000 samples were taken. Interestingly, results showed that, of all participants, 63% preferred gambling online rather than the more traditional way of doing it in person. It may be important to consider that all the participants had, in some way, participated in online gambling at least once during the last 12 months.
YouGov commented on these findings, saying that it was a combination of factors that has led to these results. Innovation, the pandemic and de-regulations in certain markets, has led to the online gambling industry hitting newer heights than ever.
Of the nations that took part, online gambling in India was found to be the country where it is most popular. From the Indian respondents, 76% of them claimed that they preferred verticals, which compares to Great Britain’s 70% and 69% for Italy. In Singapore, gambling online is illegal, and the results showed they are the least interested in the verticals, with a figure of 56% preferring gambling online. Not far ahead of Singapore were the United States, Germany and Sweden, who each recorded a 58% preference.
Lottery Tickets The Most Popular From of Gambling
Buying lottery tickets online was found to be the most common form of gambling online, confirmed by 42% of all participants doing it. The second most popular online gambling activity comes in the form of sports betting. Results showed that 36% of the people had done this. Making up the least popular forms of online gambling was Lottery Instant Wins and Online Slots, showing participation numbers of 23% and 13%, respectively.
In Denmark, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Singapore, Lottery draws are most popular. In Sweden, Italy, Mexico, Spain and the United States, sports betting is more popular. The results show that, in India, Fantasy Sports betting is most popular.
Problem Gambling Questions – Is Problem Gambling Being Dealt With?
The survey asked for opinions on gambling harm and regulations. An overwhelming 57% of people believe that gambling companies aren’t taking problem gambling seriously enough, and only 16% think that these businesses do. 69% of Italian responses believe businesses are not taking problem gambling as seriously as they should, not far behind was Great Britain with 66%, and in France, it was 59%. Opinion was more divided in Germany (52%), and the United States (50%), Mexico came in at 45%.
The report revealed that, on a whole, 23% of the respondents believe that gambling online should be made illegal – 44% think the opposite.
Gambling in the USA
The YouGov survey revealed that in the United States, many of those who gamble online also gamble in person, with results showing 35% of people do; which is significantly higher than the world average, 20%. Players from the United States show a higher chance of gambling once or more a month, compared to other countries, while online bingo, slots, and particularly fantasy sports are disproportionately more popular across the United States. In contrast, online lotteries are less popular.
31% of respondents from the United States believe gambling online should be made illegal, and 26% believe there should be more action from the government to guard gamblers from potential harm.
