When will the AI-Content Version of Panda hit come

AI content might save you time in the short term, but if Google updates have taught us anything from the past, it will bring out an update to quash it – or we’ll see the same story repeatedly! (Photo by Mojahid Mottakin on Unsplash)

I’ll get straight to the point. Google’s algorithm complements AI-generated ‘spun’ articles and pushes them above the websites that researched and wrote the original content piece.

These rankings are probably based on website authority, so the big boys are getting away with it. This is rather than ranking based on quality or being original, which is what I thought Google’s agenda was.

To give you some background, if you have been in the SEO or the writing game for any period, you probably remember the Panda update.

It came into force to tackle article spinning. You’d put someone’s content into a spinner, and it would use synonyms to regurgitate the original news piece. These articles then passed plagiarism-checking tools like Copyscape – a very cool tool to detect plagiarism. We also have Grammarly and Originality.AI to check for plagiarism these days.

Of course, the spinning software of the past wasn’t as talented as AI. The synonyms didn’t fit the context; it was a bad read, but no one cared because it ranked. The best term from the top of my head to explain these articles’ quality is ‘gobbledygook’.

We are now in a modern era of article spinning, rendering Panda useless!

It seems spinning is now back with a vengeance. Except this time, as much as I hate to admit it, the articles make sense, or at least you can read them and get the gist of the content. The culprit of what I can only describe as copyright theft is ChatGPT – now the ultimate article spinner of the modern era. Better put – the ultimate way to cheat the system once again.

There are 100s of sites in my niche using this advanced spinning tactic, and worst of all, it’s working for them. At least it is for now – I’ll get deeper into the risk these sites are taking later in this article.

My Research Led Me to Some Shocking Revelations

I won’t put anyone’s website under the bus, but after the recent Google update, naturally, I began researching who is ranking where. I began by looking into sites like ours. Essentially, competitors also producing iGaming news, reviews, and other gambling entertainment content.

That research eventually led me to this AI-generated news piece.

First Impressions

I have to say that I am surprised to see aged content knocked down the list on the search results and replaced by another website which has spun its competitor’s content. How do I know it is AI content? I couldn’t help but notice how badly some of the news articles read. On top of this, how similar the stories across these sites are. Typically, all our content providers go directly to the source—for example, the UKGC for UK licensing news and Canadian newspapers for news on the Canadian iGaming market.

The modern-day ChatGPT spinning wasn’t something I’d noticed as we don’t do regurgitated news from other news sources; it’s just not our style. Yet, now I am seeing it full swing, which I guess was inevitable, but I believe it is not here to stay!

AI Checking Tools Revealed a Number of iGaming Sites Using AI

After using the free AI checking tools, I found many of what I call ‘fake’ news reports getting the green light as human-written content. The free tools don’t have the time or money to invest in programming the correct ChatGPT NLP (Natural Language Processing) algorithm. However, my paid AI detector, Originality.ai, is tuned into the ChatGPT open-source code and has the NLP spot on. I see 90% to 100% AI-generated news on some top iGaming sites that free tools show as 90% likely written by a human. Speechless!

That’s not all. My search went wider into other niches doing the same, and Google’s new algo is rewarding them.

Fake 0% AI Results on Free Tools Vs Paid Tools

  • Paid – Originality.ai has nailed the AI NKPs
  • Paid – Real results with AI content exposed
  • Free – It is just an up-sell or a traffic generator feeding another website’s authority
  • Free – Misleading Results – using poor NLP algorithms to detect AI

More Shocking AI Spinning in Casino and Game Reviews!

As I am also tuned into the iGaming scene, I also checked out a few online casino review sites, slot reviews, and game reviews. WOW! The number of sites Google is not only indexing but giving precedence over the source of these reviews other sites have used to GPT4 spin their content is madness.

They are blatantly regurgitated content. Real journalists who have put their blood and sweat into research, writing, and editing their news to bring engaging and factual news stories to those who want to know might as well throw the towel in. Why make all that effort for someone else to use a prompt to create another version of the original and pass plagiarism? Again – madness!

The issue now is that I read through another news site only to see the same story rewritten, repeatedly, repeatedly, and again – (you get the picture). OK, this article rewriting is nothing out of the ordinary. There is no shortage of websites hiring writers on the cheap to rewrite someone else’s work.

Yet, they are human writers; you can see their personalities and opinions come through in their rewrites. Most even add a few facts using industry knowledge and experience.

Another Spanner in the Works!

Remember, in the introduction, I said, ‘This is rather than ranking based on quality or being original, which is what I thought Google’s agenda was?”. I was referring to quality content over links and well-written as well as ‘original content‘ that creates authority. And it is links that create authority, no? It’s not the best argument; many other factors create authority.

Yet, quality content does not appear to be up there in the ‘authority points scoring contest’ because we are seeing spun AI content on high authority sites working for them in the search engine rankings.

Case and point – a recent interview with Google’s Gary Illyes published on ‘Search Engine Land’:

Will there be an AI version of the Panda Update for content?

Yes- I believe it is coming! All those sites copying content are falling into Google’s black hole. The search engine giant tends to do this. It allows people to get away with using certain SEO and content tricks for a while. Then ‘BANG’ the search engine giant brings in an update to quash it, and the house comes tumbling down.

  • Newbies: For those of you using ChatGPT to laugh off my ‘yes’ answer, I would venture to say you are late in the game. I.e., you are new to this SEO and content gig. Read the caption of this article – if Google updates have taught us anything from the past, it will bring out an update to quash those taking shortcuts! For example, stealing images from other sites, copying content, and spinning using AI is almost certainly next in the queue.
  • Old School SEO & Content Creators: For those of you with experience in SEO (back to the days of Panda and Penguin), well, you know the risk you are taking, and there is a high percentile truth element in what I am saying here. To cut a long story short, all of those who have been in the SEO game for a long time, you know you are taking a huge gamble using AI Content, so why do it?
FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

I recently read an excellent article on AI-generated content in iGaming from a demo slot site, and his expression was FOMO (Fear of missing out). It’s the same as the stock markets: DOT.com, the housing market boom, and some cryptos. People invest because they see it rising and don’t want to miss all the action.

Then boooooooooooom! It all comes crashing down… AI content – don’t use it. Don’t use free tools that pass your AI content because most sites are trying to sell you AI solutions. Their hidden sales message is ‘Hey, look, AI content works – now try out AI-generated tools!’. However, I suggest you go to Originality.ai, and you’ll find content passed as human-generated flagged as 80 to 100% AI-generated on Originality.ai. Amazingly, many of these pages are on page one of Google.

The only question is, when will we see the AI version of the Panada update? Shortcuts in SEO and content are short-lived. And I hate to say it when the time comes – I told you so!
