On Tuesday, the UKGC was awarded the first-ever IAGR Regulatory Excellence Award. Run by the International Association of Gaming Regulators, the awards ceremony hosted in Boston, announced its first two prestigious winners.

The IAGR Regulatory Excellence Award was awarded to the UKGC due to an initiative that managed to club the gambling industry together with the purpose of collaborating on three main areas of concern.

The UKGC had concerns about VIP schemes on betting platforms that incentivised high-value customers to persuade them to gamble more. The authority also wanted to discuss games and their designs, and the possibility of using advertising tech that could ensure gambling advertising did not reach children and vulnerable people.

It is widely accepted that the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is among the if not, the best performing gambling authorities in the world. No other country is as strictly regulated as the UK when it comes to gambling both online and offline, and the UKGC, which works under the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport, is responsible for providing licensing, regulation, advice, and guidance to all gambling entities that operate within Britain.

The UKGC has worked hard to reduce and prevent crime in gambling, ensure that players receive a fair and safe experience, and protect vulnerable players and children from advertisements and gambling issues. So, it comes as no surprise to learn that the authority is the first winner of the IAGR Regulatory Excellence Award at the inaugural 2021 International Regulatory Awards.

More About the IAGR Awards and Winners

There were just two categories at the IRA this year, the Regulatory Excellence Category and the Best Regulatory Campaign Category. Of course, we know that the UK Gambling Commission won the former for generating collaboration within the iGaming industry that helped to improve on three areas of concern. However, the UKGC was nominated twice in that category, with the other nomination being due to establishing the Lived Experienced Advisory Panel (LEAP). That panel takes on board the experiences of people that have suffered gambling harm, as well as those that have not. The UKGC then uses the information learned and uses it as part of its decision-making process when considering safer gambling policies and the advice it gives to other bodies and governments.

Also nominated in that category was the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, and the Victorian Commission of Liquor and Gaming Regulation. As for the Best Regulatory Campaign category, this was won by the Office of Responsible Gambling NSW in Australia. This body was also nominated twice for the award, while the other nominations were for the Australian Communications and Media Authority and the Norwegian Gaming Authority.
