The move into online gambling by electronics and movie entertainment firm Sony continues after the company just filed a patent for a Sony Esports wagering platform! With the rise of Esports fuelled by the pandemic, Sony sees the betting side of the world’s latest form of online entertainment as a profitable venture with markets such as Tekken 7 and Call of Duty Warzone already earmarked for real-time betting odds!

Even when lockdown eases in most countries, people that may never have discovered Esports games are now enlightened which is now pointing towards a huge growth trend on games that were in fact dropping in numbers pre-pandemic. Games like League of Legends, Dota 2, Overwatch, Call of Duty, Counter-Strike, and Fortnight have all had huge influxes of downloads and new player sign-ups, plus older games like Dota 2 have suddenly seen inactive turning active again!

Imminent Esports Growth: A research report issued by MarketWatch suggests that the Esports betting market will see a vast increase over the next 4 years! It should see a 13% growth rate bringing global revenue directly from the betting market up to a staggering $1.3 million (€1.06 million/£919.4 thousand)!

Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a unique patent which will give players that use game console platforms like Sony PlayStation 5 to place Esports bets, while we also expect the betting platform to give betting fans access to live streams for in-play Esports betting markets. Although reports do not confirm this will be the case, we are using our vast experience of what makes one betting platform more successful than another – and in-play can really make the difference. Putting two and two together, we know Sony’s research team will have already discovered in-play and live streams are key to success!

iGaming: Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is another division involved in online gambling activities. It is in cahoots with the iGaming giant Playtech to bring a live casino game show version of the TV show hit Who Wants to be a Millionaire to all Playtech live casinos!

Esports Odds Presented to Players Using Computer Simulations!

In the patent, Sony mentions several features for its new platform which already many assume will launch on Sony products such the PlayStation 5. Once the rollout is complete and in action, we presume that Sony will reach out to other brands to sell this new concept taking Sony from an Esports betting platform designed to an Esports aggregator! It would seem like the natural course to take just like BTG takes royalties on Megaways tech, Playtech sells its casinos/sports platforms to operators, or in the same way electronic competitor LG gets paid for Sony using its OLED tech!

Here are some of the features mentioned in the patent:

  • Real Time Esports Betting Odds: The new Esports platform will give game console players Esports odds in real time – these may be flash odds while players are playing other games, on a scroll bar, and most definitely when players click to access the betting interface!
  • Updated Odds: The platform will derive odds from previous/past Esports games, which is how most sports betting and other Esports betting companies also derive their odds from!
  • Quick Access: Players will have ‘quick access’ to these odds via a betting panel that will need to be configured to accept a variety of payment and withdrawal method!
  • Double Down: Betting fans can cash out after they win or use a ‘double down’ feature so when they win a bet, they double down by betting again at the click of a button!

Additional Odds: There will also be pari-mutuel odds included on the system which means players in a betting community can make bets with each other which is very much like the Betfair marketplace!
