What does the future hold for mankind? More importantly for iGaming fans, how will we gamble online in the future? Will we really be standing at slot machines on a 3D augmented reality casino floor or playing live dealer games sitting inside a casino in the metaverse?

Some people said virtual reality worlds, like the one depicted in the film Read Player One, will never become a reality. While there are others that see the future of mankind head deep in virtual worlds known as the Metaverse. The latter is 99.9% correct, and I would go as far as to venture to say 100%. It will be the next big thing to change the way we interact since smartphones.

One of the most interesting pieces covering online gambling in the Metaverse is covered in Asia Gaming Brief. It covers what the metaverse is, how virtual land is being sold in the metaverse, and also shows the Luxor Hotel on the Vegas strip in the well-known VR blockchain metaverse Decentraland. Evolution is already using NetEnt’s (Formerly Net Entrainment) famous explorer Gonzo to explore VR games and Playtech has also delved into VR with its Hot Gems VR casino game title.

When online casinos first began, which was Microgaming back in 1994, the World Wide Web was only just making use of the internet’s infrastructure. It was a miracle that we could log on to a computer and play tables games and slots. Back then, it was inconceivable that we would eventually be playing high tech 3D animated video slots or live blackjack games streamed via webcam on a mini handheld computer, i.e., out smartphones. Yet it happened as smartphones became the next big shift in mankind’s existence. Smartphones changed the lives of those that grew up without them, while millennials couldn’t imagine a world without them.

The same will happen with VR tech, and in the midst of this shift, online casino metaverse tech will transpire.

Entain is already investing into the New Ennovate Lab’s mission to look into how online casinos and sports betting environments could be implemented. The idea is to provide a virtual reality platform that is both regulated and secure for players, making it easier to find and play at the best online casinos.

How will online casinos or VR casinos operate in the futuristic Metaverse?

Most new online casinos in the metaverse will use blockchain technology to provide anonymity to their customers like this. Inevitably Bitcoin or other cryptos, as well as NFTs, will be used for anonymous transactions.

In effect, a metaverse is a virtual world with user-made content. A game designer doesn’t have to create every virtual object from scratch to create a great experience. Popular game creators like Roblox and Minecraft have already made a huge impact with user-made content. Simple building blocks and network effects can harness players’ creativity and let them interact with each other. The next question is: how can the metaverse be made better?

While it sounds like a wonderful idea, it’s important to understand that there are multiple issues that come with this technology. A virtual world can be hard to make work and play, and the risks are high. However, if it is well-developed, it will make gaming more fun and a great experience.

Many people have been swept up in the hype surrounding the metaverse, and while companies like Facebook and Google claim that it will replace the internet someday, some critics point out that this concept is simply a marketing gimmick.

While the metaverse it may be a marketing tactic for these companies, iGaming companies are legitimately investing in the creation of VR casino games, and should the metaverse become reality, well a virtual reality, brands like NetEnt, Playtech, and Entain will already be ready for the new shift to VR gambling. However, actually moving into VR online casinos and casino worlds is still at least another 5 to 10 years in the making.
