Although delayed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, laws to legalise Dutch online gambling are due to come into effect on the 1st of October, with BtoBet forecasting that the online gambling industry in the country could be worth €1.3 billion by 2025! The country boasts a thriving land-based gambling industry, but current laws prohibit online gambling. According to BtoBet, this suggests that once the lights turn green for a new regulated online gambling industry, it is likely to prove fruitful.

BtoBet, a leading iGaming aggregation platform that offers companies the ability to customise and launch online casinos and sportsbooks, released the findings of a study on the potential of the Dutch online gambling market. According to the report, the company believes the Dutch online gambling industry could be worth as much as €1.3 billion by the year 2025.

Those figures claimed that the online gambling market in the Netherlands, brought in gross gaming revenue of €424 million in 2019, a figure that pales in comparison to the land-based gambling industry which brought in €2.3 million in the same year. However, the report suggests that this will change significantly once online gambling becomes legal later this year. BtoBet goes as far as saying those revenues will be beaten within just the first three months under a regulated online gambling industry. Furthermore, the report forecasts an industry worth up to €25 billion in 2025!

Dutch Online Gambling is Legal from 1st of October

The Remote Gambling Act in the Netherlands first came into effect on the 1st of April, nearly a year later than planned. it was shelved on three previous occasions due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic continues to subside, this has allowed the government to put the act into effect. The market is due to open on the 1st of October, at which point, all licensed online operators will be able to provide online gambling to Dutch citizens.

The KSA, the Dutch regulatory authority tasked with overseeing online gambling in the country, will issue a maximum of 35 licenses to online gambling operators. According to the latest reports, there have been 28 applications so far.

The KSA recently entered into an MoU with the UKGC, a regulatory authority widely accepted as having the strictest rules and regulations. This memorandum of understanding means the two authorities will cooperate with each other by openly sharing information in a bid to improve protection for players suffering with gambling problems.
